The financial service industry is one of the most competitive and highly globalized sectors due to the extensive use of information technology system by firms operating in the sector. The information technology has become the core of all companies in the financial sector at the global level. Banks are always seeking to provide their clients with the best banking services through their staff by supporting the efficiency and quality of the staff members with the best rehabilitation and training programs that provide them necessary knowledge to fulfill needs of bank’s clients with the latest developments in the banking industry and services in the competitive market. With technological development, innovative communication methods, virtual reality; e-market improvement and alternative work patterns, workplace continues to change rapidly (Challenger, 2000).
Environmentrefers to the surroundings and all those things that impact human being during the life time are collectively known as environment. A working environment is the environment where people work together for achieving organization objectives. It means systems, processes, structures and tools and all those things which interact with employees and affect in positive or negative ways on employees’ performance.According to Tripathi (2014)the work environment can be defined as the environment in which people work that include physical setting, job profile, culture and market condition. Moreover, today’s working environment differs from the past because workers today are working with technology advancement. Workers, especially in government sector also play variety of roles to fulfill their working needs (Junaidaet al., 2010). According to Shore & Shore (1995), employees who are able to experience and receive recognition for their work are also able to have a better perception of their work, their workplace and the people they work for. Effective work environment encourages the happier employee with their job that ultimatelyinfluences the growth of an organization as well as growth of an economic.
This study was designed to analyze the effect of workplace environment on employee job performance and employee job satisfaction in Nepalese commercial banks. The study is based on the primary data for 20 commercial banks with 150 observations.Structured question was distributed to the employee of commercial banks to collect the information. The questionnaire was divided into 2 sections where the first section includes the personal detail of the respondent and rest of other section includes statement question workplace environment and employee performance. There were 4-7 statements that characterized each factor that effect the employee performance. Each statement was measured on Likert scale where, 1= strongly disagree and 5= strongly agree used to measure the perception of the respondents about that statement. The research design adopted in this study is descriptive and casual comparative research design to deal with the fundamental issues associated with various factors of workplace environment on employee performance in Nepalese commercial banks.
The correlation matrix shows that physical environment is positively related to employee performance and job satisfaction. It indicates that better the physical environment, higher would be the employee performance and job satisfaction. Similarly, there is positive relationship between psychosocial environment and employee performance and job satisfaction indicating that better psychosocial environment leads to increase in employee performance and job satisfaction. The result also shows that there is positive correlation between work life balance and employee performance and job satisfaction. This indicates that better the work life balance practices, higher would be the employee performance and job satisfaction. Similarly, workplace environment is positively related to employee performance and job satisfaction. It indicates that better the workplace environment, higher would be employee performance and job satisfaction.
The regression results indicate that the beta coefficient for physical environment is positive with employee performance. It indicates that better physical environment has a positive impact on employee performance. Likewise, the result also shows that the beta coefficients for psychosocial environment are positive with employee job performance. It reveals that supporting psychosocial environment has a positive impact on employee job performance. Similarly, the beta coefficients for workplace environmentare positive with employee job performance. It indicates that better workplace environmenthas positive impact on employee job performance. The result also shows that beta coefficient for physical environment is positive with job satisfaction. It indicates that better physical environment has a positive impact on employee satisfaction.
